What is Mastoid?

Behind the ear, back part of the temporal bone of the skull known as mastoid. It contains open, air-containing spaces for the transmission of blood vessels. It is connected to the middle ear and used as an attachment to the neck muscles. Its scratchy surface supply attachment to various muscles.

The mastoid process, the size, and form of which vary slightly; it is bigger in the male than in the female. Inside of its filled with sinuses, or mastoid cells which are prone to infection and inflammation.

Mastoiditis is an inflammation of the mucosal lining of the mastoid cavity and mastoid air cell system. In the same way, it is an untreated middle ear infection of the mastoid bone inside the process. For that reason, mastoiditis is one of the major cause of child mortality.

Signs and symptoms:

  • Swelling and redness around the ear
  • Enlarged ear

  • Fever, and headache
  • Drainage from the ear occurs in most serious cases.

Diagnosing Mastoiditis

Diagnosing mastoiditis is clinically based. In this, there is a scan via MRI or CT scan that gives an image. The image shows the damage is how close to the brain and facial nerves. Based on the diagnosis the treatment is prescribed by the doctor.

Treatments:

For the mild purpose antibiotics, ear drops, and ear cleaning may help.

In order that if the condition is severe Myringotomy (fluid drainage of the middle ear) and mastoidectomy (removal of the infected bone) options are available.

Mastoiditis must not be left untreated because, in the long run, it might result in hearing loss, mastoid cancer, or brain abscess that can lead to death.
