How does a stammer affect communication?

Stammering is generally characterized via repetitions of sounds, syllables, component-words, entire phrases, phrases which are different from those of ‘usually fluent’ individuals. It is very important for the speaker to keep in mind, the production and the reception of speech, in good communication.

Stammering results in breaking of the fluidity of speech. Stammering varies from one person to another. Sometimes, it becomes very difficult to utter a single word while at the same time people can put in extra words and sound.

Nevertheless, stammering is sometimes unpredictable, some people who stutter may face the challenge of more stressful situations.

However, the issues go deeper day by day when the stuttering start affecting oral communication. People who stammer try to adopt strategies to help their speech. While some of them can be very helpful, others may actually be detrimental to interpersonal communication and mainly work performance.

It is a developmental disorder. There is a constant building of strong negative feeling within those who stammer.  The fear and the acceptance of stammering often results in anger, frustration, and embarrassment at public places because of stammering.  People start forgetting there are more to the people except stammering because of this peer pressure it becomes nearly impossible for the speaker to have a fluent communication.

Symptoms and sign of stammering:

  • Speech may come out in spurts.

  • Rapid blinking and trembling lips

Difficulties faced by people who stammer which affect communication –

  • People avoid a situation in which they stammer a lot.
  • Kids rearrange their words in order to avoid a stammering situation.
  • People often use interjections for eg – umm, like to delay the initiation of any sentence

THERAPY

For Children:

  • Give the kid some time to make a sentence that he/she wants to say.
  • Slow down background noise at home like TV volume or any other music volume especially during talking time.
  • Slow down your own talking speed while talking to the kid.
  • Nor comment on the stutter neither try to bring attention to it.
  • Get down to your kid-level while they are talking to you so that they can realize you are interested in talking to them.

For Adults:

  • Do breath exercise, produce sound slowly and with less anxiety.
  • Monitor and control your speech
  • If possible, produce fluent speech in different languages.
  • Look in-depth and determine your strengths and weaknesses in every area of communication what is also called a speech and language assessment.
