Hearing disorders are disorders related to the auditory system. It occurs due to aging, high volume, infections, genetics.

List of hearing disorders

1. Meniere’s disease

Meniere’s disease is a disorder of inner ear which causes episodes in which you feel as if you’re spinning, have a fluctuating hearing loss, and in the end, you have permanent loss of hearing, ringing in the ear (tinnitus), and most of the time feeling of fullness as well as pressure in your ear. Generally, this disease affects only one ear.

Meniere’s disease can occur at the point of life, but it usually occurs between the ages of 20 to 50. It’s a chronic condition, but a number of treatments can help in relieving the symptoms and minimizing the long-term impact.

2. Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the perception of noise and ringing in the ears. It is a very common problem which affects about 1 in 5 people. Tinnitus isn’t a condition itself — it’s just a symptom of any other underlying condition, such as age-related hearing loss, ear injury and a circulatory system disorder.

3. Otosclerosis

Otosclerosis is caused by an extra growth of bone in the ears, which leads to hearing loss. Generally, a surgical operation is going to restore the hearing.

Otosclerosis is the problem of the bone in the middle ear and more especially it deals with the shape. In its early stages, the person who is suffering from otosclerosis does not feel its effect.

Some other hearing disorders are the conductive hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss, presbycusis, unilateral hearing loss, cholesteatoma, etc

4. Acoustic Neuroma:-

Another name of acoustic neuroma is the vestibulocochlear nerve,  vestibular schwannomas or neurilemmoma. The acoustic neuroma connects the inner ear with the brain. There are two different parts of acoustic neuroma. One part forwards the sound and the other one send balance information from the inner ear to the brain.

Symptoms of the acoustic neuroma are ringing in the ear called tinnitus, sudden loss of hearing and fullness of ear. Surgical treatment is the only way to get rid of it if the tumor is large.

5. Head injury or Trauma:-

Head injury is a kind of injury to your brain skull or scalp, head injuries. The severe head injury called trauma. There are two types of head injury

  • Closed head injury in which the skull of a person does not break.
  • Open head injury in which the skull of a person breaks and cause damage to the brain.

Symptoms of head injury can nausea, headache, spinning sensation, vomiting and many more. The treatment done by the doctor will be on the basis of your head injury.

6. Ear Wax

Due to excess ear wax in ear causes hearing loss. It is the main reason for the conductive hearing loss. It creates a barrier that stops sounds from reaching the eardrum, having a significant effect on hearing ability.

7. Ear Infection

Otitis media/ glue ear is an infection in your middle ear that causes conductive hearing loss.

8. Chronical Smoking Or Drinking

Auditory Cortex gets damaged by excessive drinking and affecting the brain.

9. Smoking

Carbon dioxide and nicotine are present in smoking materials.  It tightens the blood vessel which restricts to flow the blood via blood vessels. Nicotine affects the neurotransmitters which are responsible for sound processing. Hence, it affects our auditory system.

10. Aging

This is one of the most common causes of the sensorineural hearing loss also known as Presbycusis or age-related hearing loss. This cause affects one in three American between the ages of 65-74 and 1 in 7 people of age 65. It is really difficult to notice this loss as it happens gradually over time, typically in both the ears. It is due to high pitched sounds.
