Helen wasn’t born with disabilities. When she was just 19 months old, she contractile an unknown illness described by the doctor as scarlet fever or meningitis. Which result in combined vision and hearing loss.

When she was 10, she met Anne Sullivan, her trainer and lifelong companion. Who helped build her wondrous journey and taught her the manual alphabet (sign language of deaf people).

Helen Keller started writing on a grooved board under which a sheet of paper would be set. By the age of 21, she also learned the Braille script which helped her a lot to read and write. With the help of Sullivan and Sullivan’s future husband, John Macy, Keller wrote her first book “The story of my life”.

Braille Language

Braille is a touchable writing technique as opposed to visual impairment. At the age of fifteen, Louis Braille, it’s a creator who lost his vision in a childhood accident. He formed a coding system for the French alphabet as a betterment on night writing for soldiers.

It is an arrangement of raised dots in various patterns for each letter. A Braille cell includes 6 raised dots organized in 2 columns, each one has three dots. The dot positions represented numbers from one to six whereas 64 solutions are possible using dots. This is how blind people examine.

This is how Helen Keller learned how to read braille systems the same way that most blind people do.
